I've loved most of David Fincher's work to date. The movie is loosely based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, and was getting rave reviews all around. But contrary to public opinion, I was rather unimpressed by this movie. And that 's putting it lightly.
It's like that line by George Carlin:
“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What’s that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you’re too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you’re young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating …and you finish off as an orgasm.”
- George Carlin, 1937-2008
Well, that one liner was pretty much expanded to a whole plodding movie where Brad Pitt ages backwards, and wasn't even funny at that. Born old, wrinkled and arthritic, he goes through all the indignities of old age when he is quite young, and the great love of his life, Cate Blanchett, is always either too old or too young for him.
The make-up is fantastic, or it's the greatest commercial for botox ever. Eitherway, after nearly three hours of watching Brad Pitt gradually looking younger and younger, you realize that both he and the movie have precious little to say. On the whole, a little boring.
